GoldStar Cafe

An online learning community for children aged 11 to 14

Goldstar Cafe is a safely mediated international online learning community where young secondary school-age children can make friends, have fun and learn - at home and at school.

There's so much to do, like hanging out in the Talk Zone, writing about music in the What Rocks Zine, learning digital imaging in the Star Studio, learning ICT skills and getting credits to swap for extra features.

Here are some of the things children can do in the GoldStar Cafe:

  • email and instant message - communicate safely with their GoldStar Cafe friends
  • homepages - build multimedia web pages about their interests
  • zines - write articles for the community magazines and make their own zines
  • zones - join discussion forums on fun or important stuff and school work
  • competitions - compete for HomePage of the Week and win great prizes
  • star credits - learn ICT skills and get credits to swap for more features
  • news - see what's happening in the real world and write their own newspapers

What do children learn?

Children have fun sharing their interests and at the same time they learn important life skills:

  • how to be safe and behave responsibly online
  • how to understand and work with others
  • how to communicate safely and effectively
  • how to do advanced ICT skills
  • they get lots of help with their homework

Is Goldstar Cafe safe?

How are members validated? - Children can join at home with parental permission and there is a strict validation process. They can join through school and teachers confirm they are genuine.

How is communication monitored? - All communications are scanned to block bad language and to alert the mediators to anything unsafe.

How are children looked after? - Trained mediators are online during "Live Time" to monitor communications, keep children safe and help them. They contact teachers or parents if they have any serious concerns about a member.
